As a Gardener for the National Trust, you'll be a hands-on member of the team, involved in every aspect of gardening at Moseley Old Hall. Responsible for day-to-day maintenance, and the highest standards of horticulture, you'll also play a vital role in improving the experience of visitors to the garden and wider estate.
You'll lead an enthusiastic team of volunteers who are passionate about the presentation and development of Moseley's gardens. You'll become part of a wider outdoor team and work closely with our Ranger, where you will mutually support each other in the maintenance and conservation of our outdoors. Your role also includes a proportion of weekend and bank holiday working.
What it's like to work hereReporting to the Property Operations Manager, you'll meet regularly with other gardeners within in the portfolio as well as regional advisors to continue to develop the gardens.
Moseley Old Hall is the former farmhouse famous for sheltering Charles II after the Battle of Worcester in 1651. This gem of a property has ambitious plans and is undergoing exciting developments, including new accessible paths and play equipment to ensure visitors have the best experience possible and ensure we can continue to conserve the indoors and outdoor spaces in our care. Your understanding and enthusiasm of these developments will be a big part of delivering the role. Visitors also enjoy tours of our Hall, handmade refreshments in our Tearoom, a Second hand Bookshop and acres of outdoors to connect with nature.
What you'll be doingYou'll be helping to keep the gardenin tiptop condition every day. This might involve daily checks to make sure all areas are safe for people visiting, routine tasks such as weeding, pruning and mulching, and using machinery such as hedge cutters, leaf blowers, lawnmowers and tractors.
Other duties might include propagation, cutting flowers for the house, preparing plants for sale, tree safety work and garden design
. You may be involved in recycling and managing waste, along with the rest of the garden team.
You'll also engage with our visitors and share your enthusiasm for gardens and the work we do.
Who we're looking forWe'd love to hear from you if you're:
- an enthusiastic horticulturist and hands-on gardener, who's worked with hard landscaping before
- knowledgeable about plants, with a great eye for detail.
- experienced with machinery, including tractors, chainsaws, rotary and cylinder mowers, and with some knowledge of maintenance
- a driver with a full licence
- able to manage a demanding outdoor role
- good at talking to, and getting on with, all kinds of people
- equally confident working within a team, with volunteers or on your own
- able to keep to time, plan and meet deadlines
