We are seeking a motivated and reliable Neighbourhood Services Operative (Gardener) to carry out horticultural and grounds maintenance duties across the County Borough, enhancing the standards of public parks and open spaces. The role requires a minimum qualification of Level 2 City & Guilds or equivalent. Reporting to the Team Leader or Charge Hand, you will contribute to scheduled and forward work programmes, with flexibility to work across various departments within Neighbourhood Services as priorities require. These may include Waste, Highways, Street Cleansing, or Cemeteries.
Your Duties: - Perform a range of gardening duties with minimal supervision and initiative.
- Carry out general grounds maintenance, including grass cutting using pedestrian and ride-on mowers.
- Operate hand tools such as strimmers, hedge cutters, and blowers as required.
- Mark football fields and repair fine turf and playing surfaces.
- Litter picking and bin emptying duties.
- Assist the Arboricultural Team when required.
- Drive vehicles and pull trailers (subject to holding appropriate qualifications).
- Conduct soil cultivation, digging, forking, mulching, watering, raking, weeding, pruning, seed sowing, bed preparation, and planting.
- Maintain and cultivate lawns.
- Ensure all tools, garden equipment, and machinery are correctly maintained and safe to use, reporting defects as necessary.
- Assist with landscape scheme construction.
- Handle seasonal bedding removal and planting.
- Adhere to and promote Health and Safety legislation to ensure safe working environments.
- Maintain cleanliness and security of vans and tool sheds.
- Use natural methods for plant protection and pest control, avoiding chemical use.
- Participate in training as required.
- Undertake additional duties within other Neighbourhood Services departments.
Short-Term Objectives: - Provide maintenance support for the Parks Team to meet council objectives and priorities.
- Assist across all Neighbourhood Services departments as needed.
Long-Term Objectives: - Contribute towards achieving quality accreditation for Green Flag Parks.
- Maintain high standards in the Borough's green spaces.
- Enhance the resilience of Neighbourhood Services by adapting to and supporting departmental needs.
Your Profile: - Qualified to a minimum of Level 2 City & Guilds or equivalent.
Your Benefits: - £12.59 per hour.
